Kumbel Traverse: An Exciting Hike
Kumbel Traverse is one of the most exciting and scenic hikes in the Ile-Alatau mountain range. The hike starts with the classic route through Kok-Zhailau Plateau, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks, and continues up to the Three Brothers Peak, a notable landmark in the region. However, unlike the traditional route, we take a different path for the descent. Instead of returning the same way, we descend into the neighboring Gorelnik Gorge through the Trapezium Pass, which provides unique perspectives of the valley below and adds variety to the adventure.
A More Rewarding Route
This detour makes the hike even more rewarding by allowing you to visit more picturesque locations. The Gorelnik Gorge is known for its beautiful landscapes, and as you descend, you’ll be able to stop by the Gorelnik Waterfalls, a peaceful and serene spot perfect for taking in nature’s beauty. The sound of the cascading water and the fresh mountain air make it an unforgettable experience.
Why the Kumbel Traverse Is Unique
One of the reasons I love doing this traverse from Kok-Zhailau to Gorelnik is because the descent is not as steep as the ascent, making it easier on the knees. It also means that you can enjoy the hike at a more relaxed pace without the strain of a challenging downhill. The views throughout the trek are spectacular, with panoramic vistas of the Kumbel Peak, the surrounding mountains, and the lush green valleys below. The variety of terrain, from the alpine meadows of Kok-Zhailau to the rugged cliffs of Gorelnik, offers something for everyone.
